Electric Parrothead

Day 71

Electric Parrothead
3.5 shots out of 5

The weekend is almost here!  Froze at our oldest son's baseball game tonight, so glad his weekend game is earlier in the day!  Came home and it was time to make tonight's cocktail.  I figured I'd use my new Spiced Rum in a cocktail tonight, so I chose Electric Parrothead.

I gave tonight's cocktail 3.5 shots out of 5.  Personally I think I would have gone 1 of 2 different ways with this cocktail.  Either, skip the spiced rum and just stuck with the coconut rum, or decreased the spiced rum to 1/2 shot and either upped the coconut rum by 1/2 shot or the pineapple juice by 1/2 a shot (depending on how coconut-ey I'm feeling).  I think the spiced rum is a bit too spicy for this cocktail, but it wasn't horrible where I couldn't finish it.  It's not bad.......I'd just have made it a little different is all.

Here is the recipe for Electric Parrothead:

  • 1 shot coconut rum
  • 1 shot spiced rum
  • 1/2 shot blue curacao
  • 1 1/2 shots pineapple juice
In a shaker add ice, coconut rum, spiced rum, blue curacao and pineapple juice.  Shake up your ingredients real good.  Pour everything into a tall glass.

Cheers to tomorrow being Friday and the weekend being so close I can almost touch it!

Lifesaver Cocktail

Day 66

Lifesaver
2.5 shots out of 5

I was intrigued by the name I have to say.  Lifesaver, sure why not.  Sounds like the candy....although it wasn't my favorite candy, it was a well known candy.  So hey, let's give it a shot.

I gave tonight's cocktail 2.5 shots out of 5 and not because I couldn't stand the taste.  It doesn't have an ingredient in it that makes me gag or not want to drink it.  That wasn't the reason at all.  The problem with this cocktail is that.......it lacks flavor.  It kinda tastes like nothing.  Sure it's a nice green color.  I can sort of taste the pineapple juice in it......but I think the amounts of each kinda cancelled the others out or something.  I would be bummed if I paid $9 for this cocktail and it tasted like this.  Oh well.......can't win them all

Here is the recipe for a Lifesaver:

  • 1 1/2 shots coconut rum
  • 1/2 shot melon liqueur (Midori)
  • 2 shots pineapple juice
In a shaker, add ice, coconut rum, melon liqueur and pineapple juice.  Shake up your ingredients real well.  Pour everything into a tall cocktail glass.

Here is a photo of the end result:

Cheers to the childhood candy Lifesaver and to the fact that those candies had more flavor in them then this cocktail!

Cheers!

Lady Luck Cocktail

Day 46

Lady Luck
3.5 shots out of 5

OK, so tonight I don't have a "theme" song in my head, just a song.  Good 'ole Blue Eyes is singing his song in my head as I enjoy tonight's cocktail, Lady Luck.  Can I just say that I am REALLY enjoying writing this blog!  OK, so yes it's fun to get to have a cocktail a night (and have a reason why I am doing it), but it's fun to try all of these different liqueurs, alcohols and juices that I honestly would NEVER have ever tried on my own!  Way to break me out of the vodka cran and rum and coke shell!!  I love it!!

I gave Lady Luck 3.5 shots out of 5 tonight.  This cocktail is a bit syrupey sweet to me.  A bit too much, but not enough to make me not finish the cocktail if I was to order it at a bar.  I think it would just make me finish it quicker then normal so that I could order a safer cocktail for myself afterwords.  For those of you who do enjoy the sweeter syrupey cocktails, you just might enjoy this one.

Here is the recipe for Lady Luck:

  • 3/4 shot malibu rum
  • 3/4 shot chambord
  • 3/4 shot banana liqueur
In a shaker add ice, malibu rum, chambord and banana liqueur.  Shake it up real well to get your cocktail mixed and cold.  Strain your cocktail into a chilled martini glass and enjoy.

Gilligan Cocktail

Day 45

Gilligan
4.5 shots out of 5

Another cocktail to give me a "theme" song in my head, just like the Ninja Turtle!  I'll need to go watch something on TV or read more of my book to get something else in my mind after I type my blog.

I gave tonight's cocktail 4.5 shots out of 5.  The Gilligan is an easy cocktail to drink.  It's not a super sweet syrupy cocktail at all.  The Malibu rum gives it a good coconutey taste while the banana liqueur puts a nice spin on the coconut.  I think I'm going to have to share the rest of my cocktail with my husband though because I gave him one sip and I got the "mmm, that's good" approval.  This banana liqueur is really surprising me!  It doesn't over power the cocktails that I've made with it so far, like the After Sex I made the other night.  It surprises me because I would just think that the banana flavor would kind of take over, but it just compliments what it's mixed with and gives only a subtle hint of banana, which is nice.

Here is the recipe for Gilligan:

  • 3/4 shot malibu rum
  • 3/4 shot light rum
  • 3/4 shot banana liqueur
  • 1 1/2 shots orange juice
  • 1 1/2 shots pineapple juice

In a shaker fill with ice, malibu rum, light rum, banana liqueur, orange juice and pineapple juice.  Shake it up really well to mix all of the ingredients up good.  Pour your entire mix into a tall glass and enjoy!

Cheers to Gilligan, The Skipper, The Millionaire,  Eunice, Ginger, Mary Ann and The Professor!

Alien Urine Sample Drink

Day 44

Alien Urine Sample
5 shots out of 5

I am really enjoying this Alien Urine Sample!  Yes I said it, it's really good!!!  My bartenders book has some mighty interesting named cocktails, but boy are some of them really good!  This is a very very yummy cocktail that I will definitely be making again.  OK, is it too soon to make another one now?

I gave tonight's cocktail 5 shots out of 5.  This is a very refreshing cocktail and one that's fun to drink.  Alien Urine Sample has a good mix of a few different liqueurs that makes this cocktail super yummy.  The color of it can be a little intimidating (another neon colored cocktail like the Liquid Marijuana I made not too long ago), but boy is it good!!  If you have been enjoying the same cocktails that I have been so far, you'll definitely need to try this one!!

Here are the ingredients for Alien Urine Sample:

  • 1/2 shot coconut rum
  • 1/2 shot melon liqueur
  • 1/2 shot banana liqueur
  • 1/2 peach schnapps
  • 2 shots sweet & sour juice
  • soda water
  • 1/2 shot blue curaçao
In a shaker fill with ice and add coconut rum, melon liqueur, banana liqueur, peach schnapps and sweet & sour mix.  Shake it up really good to mix everything together.  Pour everything into a tall glass, add a splash of soda water and blue curaçao.  Enjoy!!!!

Cheers to Alien Urine Samples!!  This is the only kind of urine sample I believe I will ever try!!

Ninja Turtle Cocktail

Day 39

Ninja Turtle
4.5 shots out of 5

Ding, Ding, Ding another winner!!  Thanks again Fire Wench!!  I had all of the ingredients for the Ninja Turtle, so I figured I'd give it a shot!  Yum!!

I have to admit that when I first started straining this cocktail into my glass I got a little scared.....because of it's neon-ey green color.  I have to say, do NOT let the color fool you!  This is a good cocktail!!  It kind of has a creamy taste/after-taste.  It's kind of weird that it has that because you're not expecting it at all, but it's definitely weird in a GOOD way!

I gave tonight's cocktail 4.5 shots out of 5.  The Ninja Turtle is even husband approved!  I have to admit that ever since I decided that I was going to make it tonight, I have been singing the theme song to "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" over and over again in my head!  And now I will say "You're Welcome", because I'm sure about 90% of you are now singing that song as well!

Here is the recipe for the Ninja Turtle:

  • 1 shot Malibu rum
  • 1 shot melon liqueur
  • 1 shot pineapple juice
In a shaker add ice, Malibu rum, melon liqueur and pineapple juice.  Shake it up well so that all of the ingredients mix up good.  Strain it into bud vase if you have one (like mine pictured below), or even a martini glass and enjoy!!

To those of you who used to watch the cartoon, have seen the movies or just know who the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are, Cheers to you!!

Liquid Marijuana Cocktail

Day 38

Liquid Marijuana
5 shots out of 5

OK, so I've seen this cocktail ALL OVER Pinterest and I just had to try it!  One of my best friends has been asking me to making this one as well, so here it is!!  Can I just say YUMMY!!!!  Here's to  learning yet another thing about cocktails.........I actually like sweet & sour mix!  I guess I was scared of sweet & sour mix because it reminded me of regular margaritas.....which in turn reminded me of....<gags> tequila!!  Yes, yes, I do know that I will have to make cocktails with tequila in them, and because of that I have to admit that I DID purchase a bottle of it today.

Tequila and I had a face off about 15 years ago, and I am ashamed to admit..... tequila won.  It has made me NOT like it and run from it's smell for the past 15 years.  There has been an occasion or 5 where I got up enough courage to have a shot of it again since that horrible night.....but I never drank NEARLY as much of it as I did that one night 15 years ago.  Yes......yes, I did have one night about 4 years ago where I was a little off and had a few shots of the stuff......that night didn't end well either.

Anyways, I gave tonight's cocktail 5 shots out of 5.  I am enjoying this cocktail a lot!  The sweet & sour mix is really giving it a surprisingly good taste!  I have a feeling that this cocktail will be requested at our next friend gathering.  I recommend you try this cocktail and I really hope you like it as much as, or even half as much as I do!

Here is the recipe for Liquid Marijuana:

  • 1/2 shot Malibu Rum
  • 1/2 light rum
  • 1/2 shot blue curaçao (this time it makes the cocktail good, haha)
  • 1/2 shot apple pucker
  • 2 1/2 shots sweet & sour mix
  • 2 1/2 shots pineapple juice
In a tall glass fill it up 3/4 to the top with ice.  Pour in your Malibu Rum, light rum, blue curaçao, apple pucker, sweet & sour mix and pineapple juice.  Stir it up really good and enjoy!

Sunburnt Breeze

Day 32

Sun Burnt Breeze
5 shots out of 5

Two night's ago I made a Carribean Breeze which I enjoyed......but it made me think, maybe if I add something else to it I could make that 4 shots out of 5 a solid 5.  Did it!  I added some cranberry juice and grenadine and it gave it enough of a different taste that I really liked it!  Melanie, if you are reading this blog, try tonight's cocktail and let me know what you think whether you love it, hate it or just think it's ok, I'd love to hear it!

I had a friend over tonight who thought this cocktail was VERY good as well, so I may have given her a new cocktail to start ordering!  Myself included in that one actually.  I'm curious to see if I add different juices to the mix or flavoring how many different, good, combinations I can come up with to try.

If you are enjoying the cocktails I'm enjoying, I would definitely give tonight's cocktail the Sun Burnt Breeze a try, I think you'll like it!

Here is the recipe for the Sunburnt Breeze:

  • 1 1/2 shots vanilla vodka
  • 3/4 shot Malibu Rum
  • 2 shots pineapple juice
  • 1 shot cranberry juice
  • 1/4 shot grenadine
In a shaker with no ice add your vodka, rum, pineapple juice, cranberry juice and grenadine.  Stir it up real well with your bar spoon.  Pour your cocktail into a hurricane glass filled 3/4 with crushed ice and enjoy!  Hope you like it as much as I did!!

Carribean Breeze

Day 30

Carribean Breeze
4 shots out of 5

Tonight's cocktail is dedicated to one of my readers that I received from my good friend Stephanie!  Melanie sent me an email requesting I make her favorite cocktail which is a Carribean Breeze.  I love receiving emails with cocktail suggestions from my readers!  There are sooo many cocktails for me to choose from out there, it's nice to just be given one!

In case you were wondering my 2nd oldest is playing Just Dance 3 right now and the song Dynamite is on, so I just found myself typing to it.

Tonight's cocktail I gave 4 shots out of 5 to, great choice Melanie!  I enjoyed this cocktail, and knew I would because I do enjoy the 3 ingredients that create it.  I never realized (before doing this blog) that you could or even should combine vodka and rum together.......who knew!  Now trying it, I think it makes a good base for a bunch of cocktails!  Actually I think this cocktail makes a good base to add something else to it as well.....hmmmm.

Here is the recipe for the Carribean Breeze:

  • 1 1/2 shots vanilla vodka
  • 3/4 shot Malibu Rum
  • 2 shots pineapple juice

In an iceless shaker I added the vodka, rum and pineapple juice and stirred it real good with my bar spoon.  Pour your cocktail into a hurricane glass that is 3/4 filled with crushed ice and enjoy!

Barbie Cocktail

Day 9-updated

A BARBIE COCKTAIL
2 shots out of 5

For those of you who are pinners (my pinterest term for all of us that pin, haha) on Pinterest, you've all seen the ah-maze-ing photos of some of these cocktails, food items, clothes........the list goes on and on.  Well I along with many of you assume that these photos (for the most part) are totally legit.......I mean, why wouldn't they be, right?  That opens up the doorway for tonight's cocktail, a Barbie Cocktail.

On Pinterest there was this beautiful photo of this drink that was called Barbie Cocktail, I knew I had to eventually try it!

WOW, what an amazing looking drink!  That color is amazing too.  So I decided to try it out for Day 9 of my year of cocktails.....actually a friend of mine had asked if I'd do it sooner then later please, so I decided to do as she asked and do it now while it's still fresh on all of the pinners  minds.  I checked out the ingredients and couldn't figure out how on Earth they got it to be that color of a neon pink......but hoped that I'd make it and it would magically become the amazing color I saw in the photo.   Oh and check out those...bubbles??  Wait a minute.......

Here is the recipe for a Barbie cocktail:

  • 1 shot Malibu rum
  • 1 shot vodka
  • 1 shot cranberry juice
  • 1 shot orange juice

In a shaker put add about 6 ice cubes (oh no I'm becoming more like my husband as I don't give you an exact amount of ice cubes to put in!), Malibu rum, vodka, cranberry juice and orange juice.  Give it a good shaking and then pour it into your glass through the strainer in your shaker, and...........enjoy?  or not.

As you can see I gave tonight's cocktail 2 shots out of 5.  I was feeling generous.  In my honest opinion, the fact that you put the same about of Malibu rum as vodka into this cocktail makes me raise my eyebrow (The Rock-style).

Here is a photo of the end result:

Here is a photo of the ingredients:

You be the judge of what you see here and on other websites.  Don't always believe what you see, hear, etc.  Thank you for pulling up a bar stool for my first week plus a couple days of my Year of Cocktails!!  See you tomorrow!!

Cheers to Barbie!

Husbands Hurricane

Day 1

HUSBANDS HURRICANE COCKTAIL
(5 stars out of 5)

Day One of my Year of Cocktails and I didn't have to search far to find my first cocktail recipe.  My husband has his own version of a Hurricane that I MUST say is absolutely awesome!  Now my husband isn't one for "measuring" anything, he just adds and pours and announces how much he's put in.  Me on the other hand, I have my measuring cups, spoons and shot glasses with me and ready to use so that I know exactly how much of each item I'm adding in.

Tonight's drink I give 5 stars out of 5!  This is absolutely an
amazing drink.  There are quite a few different ingredients to make it......maybe all of the different ingredients is why I've never ventured away from my "vodka cran" and "rum & coke" 2-ingredient cocktails when I'm making a drink?  I think too many ingredients used to scare me, but not anymore!  I'm a cocktail adventurer now!  Bring on the multiple ingredients.

OK, so here's the recipe for "Husbands Hurricane Cocktail":

We made this drink in a cocktail shaker.  You can make it in your glass if you like, but it's less messy in a shaker, especially if you choose to vigorously stir it instead of shaking it in the shaker.

In your shaker put:

·                     6 ice cubes (see I told you I like to measure and know exactly what I'm adding into my cocktails)
·                     1/2 of a shot of Myers's Rum-original dark  (yes it's supposed to have the s's in Myers's....I had to double check)
·                     1 shot of Malibu Caribbean Rum with coconut liqueur
·                     1/2 of a shot of Bacardi Rum (the clear one)
·                     1tsp of Lime Juice
·                     1tsp of Cointreau
·                     2 shots of Pineapple Juice
·                     2 shots of Orange Juice (you can use the kind and pulpiness you like, mine has to be Pulp Free)
·                     1 Tbs of Bar Syrup (which is the same thing as Simple Syrup)
Now you can either put your shaker top on it and give it a real good shaking, or you can stick a stir stick in it and give it a good vigorous stirring.  You can either pour it all into a glass like the one below, or choose to share and pour it into 2 shorter glasses.  Lastly pour a little swirl of Grenadine into your cocktail for a cool effect.  That's it, now you get to enjoy the awesomeness that is "Husbands Hurricane".

This is definitely going to be one of my new regular drinks to make.......now that I know how!  Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Here is a photo of the ingredients I used:                                          Here is a photo of the end product:

Enjoy!,
