Mother Earth

Day 67

Mother Earth
4.5 shots out of 5

Happy Earth Day!!  To celebrate I made a Mother Earth cocktail I found online!  I have to admit this cocktail sort of looks like my Pineapple Upside Down Cake Martini, but definitely tastes a lot better!  I am really enjoying this Mother Earth on Earth Day!

I gave tonight's cocktail 4.5 shots out of 5.  I'm convinced that it's the banana liqueur that makes this cocktail great.......but I'm sure it's because I'd bias and love the stuff!!  These ingredients actually all work well together.  I shook this cocktail up really well and made it kinda frothy on the top which I think adds to its yummyness.  I would definitely make this cocktail on Earth Day again....and on other days when I'm feeling Earthy....or even when I'm not feeling Earthy and just want a good cocktail.  Hope you all enjoyed your weekend!  We sure did here, the weather was amazing and gave us all the charge we needed.

Here is the recipe for Mother Earth:

  • 1 shot vodka
  • 1/2 shot banana liqueur
  • 1 1/2 shots orange juice
  • 3/4 shot pineapple juice
  • 1/4 shot grenadine
In a shaker add ice, vodka, banana liqueur, orange juice and pineapple juice.  Shake it up really well so that you get some foam on top.  Strain your cocktail into a martini glass.  Then pour your grenadine down the middle on the glass and enjoy!

Here's to Earth Day and a very yummy Mother Earth cocktail!!

After Sex

Day 42

After Sex
5 shots out of 5

Guess what?!  I've got a new liqueur for you all to try, Banana Liqueur.  Can I just say, YUM!!  I remembered seeing a few cocktails with this liqueur in it so when I was at the store I bought a bottle.  I flipped through my Bartenders Black Book tonight and found this little yummy cocktail.

I gave tonight's cocktail 5 yummy shots out of 5!  After Sex is a simple cocktail to make and oh so yummy!  The banana taste is quite good!  This is a cocktail that you could drink quite quickly, which makes it a good/bad choice, depending on the night.  My husband and I are taking turns sipping this After Sex cocktail and I have a feeling a second one will be made here shortly.  This liqueur will defiantly be participating in my blog in the future!

On a side note, we just got a new "bar" to house all of the new alcohols, liqueurs and cocktail glasses I am buying!  WOW, I didn't realize how much stuff we had until I had to load it all into our bar.

Here is the recipe for After Sex:

  • 1 1/2 shots vodka
  • 1/2 shot banana liqueur
  • 3 1/2 shots orange juice
  • 1/2 shot grenadine
In a shaker fill with ice, vodka, banana liqueur and orange juice.  Shake it up really good to get all the ingredients to mix up well.  Pour your cocktail into a hurricane glass and top with grenadine.

Sunburnt Breeze

Day 32

Sun Burnt Breeze
5 shots out of 5

Two night's ago I made a Carribean Breeze which I enjoyed......but it made me think, maybe if I add something else to it I could make that 4 shots out of 5 a solid 5.  Did it!  I added some cranberry juice and grenadine and it gave it enough of a different taste that I really liked it!  Melanie, if you are reading this blog, try tonight's cocktail and let me know what you think whether you love it, hate it or just think it's ok, I'd love to hear it!

I had a friend over tonight who thought this cocktail was VERY good as well, so I may have given her a new cocktail to start ordering!  Myself included in that one actually.  I'm curious to see if I add different juices to the mix or flavoring how many different, good, combinations I can come up with to try.

If you are enjoying the cocktails I'm enjoying, I would definitely give tonight's cocktail the Sun Burnt Breeze a try, I think you'll like it!

Here is the recipe for the Sunburnt Breeze:

  • 1 1/2 shots vanilla vodka
  • 3/4 shot Malibu Rum
  • 2 shots pineapple juice
  • 1 shot cranberry juice
  • 1/4 shot grenadine
In a shaker with no ice add your vodka, rum, pineapple juice, cranberry juice and grenadine.  Stir it up real well with your bar spoon.  Pour your cocktail into a hurricane glass filled 3/4 with crushed ice and enjoy!  Hope you like it as much as I did!!

Pineapple Upside Down Cake Martini

Day 22

 Pineapple Upside Down Cake Martini
3 shots out of 5

OK, if that's not a mouthful I don't know what is!  I would think a bartender would get that glazed over look in his eyes when I got to the "cake" part of the cocktail.  I've seen this cocktail a few different places, pinterest and simply doing a search online.  This cocktail looks neat because it has 2 layers.....so that means that I need to try my hand at layering again, yikes!

As the name says it, tonight's cocktail actually does taste like an  pineapple upside down cake!  It's a little weird to be honest.  I had my husband try it, and without me saying anything he said the exact same thing!

I gave the Pineapple Upside Down Cake Martini 3 shots out of 5 because for one I am really enjoying cocktails with pineapple juice in them, two it looks really neat and three it tastes pretty good!  It gets a little extra sweet at the end, but leading up to it is pretty good.  Not sure that I would order this cocktail.......I wouldn't order this cocktail at a bar myself, but if you REALLY like the cake, you'll really enjoy this cocktail.

Here is the recipe for the Pineapple Upside Down Cake Martini:

  • 1/2 shot grenadine
  • 2 shots vanilla vodka
  • 2 shots pineapple juice

Here's the trick!  Pour your grenadine in the bottom of your cocktail glass.  In a shaker put ice, vanilla vodka and pineapple juice.  Shake the crap out of this for a good 25 seconds (seems like a shortish time, but it tires out your arms and if you have a shaker like mine it gets REALLY frosty and coooold).  Slowly pour the mixture, but not the ice, along the side of the cocktail glass so that it floats on top of the grenadine.  Your mixture will be a bit foamy, which is what you want.

The Dirty Grinch

Day 16

The Dirty Grinch
4 shots out of 5

Happiest of Birthday's Dr. Seuss!!  Tonight's drink is dedicated to you!

I took a drink you may know
And I gave it quite a show,
I poured in all of it's things,
But to it I added Grenadine,

I like it, I like it, I like it,
I really really do,
I like it, I like it, I like it,
and I hope that you do too!

I gave tonight's cocktail 1 shot, 2 shot, 3 shot 4 out of 5 shots.  I took the Grinch cocktail, which should have had a cherry at the bottom, but since I didn't have one, I "attempted" to float my shaken Grinch over a bit of grenadine I had poured in the bottom of my chilled glass.  I totally failed at it.....and so the result kinda reminds me of a dirty martini, therefore I created The Dirty Grinch!  The Dirty Grinch is a very sweet drink, so little sips spaced out a bit work well with it.

I am having an absolute blast with this blog.  I hope you're enjoying reading it as well.  I would never have known of half of these drinks I've made so far, as well as the ones I have on my list to still make.  I really hope you try the cocktails that sound good to you, who knows, your new favorite drink could be one of them.  As always, if you have any drink ideas that come along with a recipe, please email them to me at cocktailady@gmail.com  I'd love to hear from you!

Here is the recipe for The Dirty Grinch:

  • 2 shots Midori
  • 1/2 shot lemon juice
  • 1/4 shot of simple syrup
  • grenadine

In a shaker with ice, add your midori, lemon juice and simple syrup.  Shake it up real good to get all of the ingredients mixed up well.  Take your chilled cocktail glass and pour in enough grenadine so that the bottom  triangular divit is filled with it.  On the back of a bar spoon, give your best attempt of floating your strained grinch mix from the shaker on top of the grenadine.  If it doesn't work, it'll still taste good!  Enjoy!!  (If you were to make the Grinch itself, you would skip the grenadine and add a cherry.  Your cocktail would be green...grinch green that is.)

Mai Tai

Day 11

Mai Tai
3 shots out of 5

Tonight's cocktail of choice is a Mai Tai, another cocktail that I have never had before.  When searching for a recipe for the Mai Tai, I ran into may different versions of it.  I then found out that the original Mai Tai did not have any pineapple, orange or guava juice in it.  Apparently the Mai Tai is a rum based drink and not a fruity drink, but somewhere down the line someone added the 3 juices to the cocktail and named it the Maui Mai Tai.  I think I might try that version another time, either in this blog of 365 cocktails or just on my own depending on how many different cocktails I create for this blog.

Well I sure did say it, this is definitely a rum drink!  WOW.  The first sip was quite limey, then I stirred in the Myers Rum that I had floated on top and WOWZERS, holy rum Batman!  After a few sips you get used to it and it actually becomes pretty enjoyable.  This is definitely a stronger drink then some of the others I've made in my 11 days.

Here is the recipe for a Mai Tai:

  • 2 shots rum
  • 1/2 shot cointreau
  • 1 shot lime juice
  • 1/2 shot orgeat
  • 1/4 shot simple syrup
  • a dash of grenadine
  • dark rum

Fill 1/3 of the shaker with ice.  Add all of the ingredients except for the dark rum and shake it up good.  Fill up your glass with crushed ice and strain the drink into your glass from the shaker.  Here's the trick, you need to float a small layer of dark rum on top of the Mai Tai.  Take your bar spoon, turn it so that the back of the spoon is facing up then tilt it so that the bottom tip of your spoon is just a little below the surface of your drink.  Basically you don't want to have the dark rum drip into your drink, which would make it sink into the Mai Tai.  Slowly pour the dark rum on the back of the spoon so that it slowly makes a layer on top of your cocktail.  We stuck a straw in it  to drink from the bottom for a few sips then ended up stirring in the dark rum and finishing it off that way.

All in all, the Mai Tai was enjoyable.  I am honestly having a blast making all of these different cocktails and trying them out.  I hope you are enjoying some of them at home as well.  If you have any different cocktails that are your absolute favorites or some that you've heard of and want me to try, send me and email at cocktailady@gmail.com and your cocktail may be featured as one of my 365 cocktails.

Cheers!

Buck's Fizz

Day 3

BUCK'S FIZZ
(2 shots out of 5)

If you haven't noticed, I just officially changed my rating system from stars to shots!  A friend of mine gave me the idea last night and I thought it was brilliant!  Day 3's drink is Buck's Fizz, which is a three ingredient cocktail.....hey, at least it's not a 2-ingredient one!.  I was hosting a Party Lite party and decided to open up the bottles of champagne we "still" had from New Years (we're not big champagne drinkers, can you tell) and make something with them for the ladies to sip on.

My non-champagne liking friends (like me) thought this drink was...aahhh, ok.....for a the few sips that fit into those plastic champagne glasses that you have to put together yourself before putting anything into them.  The ladies that did like champagne enjoyed their Buck's Fizz.

I personally found that I was bribing myself (like I have to do with the kids sometimes) to finish my Buck's Fizz, saying that when it's done, I can make myself something else that I will really like.  So I took the bait, finished the Buck's Fizz and moved onto my Husbands Hurricane!  Speaking of my husband, as he's looking at my computer monitor he makes the observation that so far all of the 3 drinks that I've made, are more or less the same color!  Now I'll need to get to the store and buy some of those different flavored liqueurs that are green and blue and what not.

Here's the recipe for Buck's Fizz:

  • 1 shot of orange juice
  • 1 dash of grenadine
  • 2 shots of chilled champagne

You can make this drink in a champagne flute or a wine glass, whichever you prefer.  First pour the shot of orange juice in the glass, then the dash of grenadine.  Next stir the two ingredients together.  Finally pour in the two shots of champagne and enjoy.  Or not, haha.

In one of the photos below you can see the amount this makes in a champagne flute.  If you put it into one of those plastic champagne glasses (the non-flute style) it will fill the glass completely.
